Southside Stomp Lindy Hop Boot Camp and Monthly Dance!

Saturday, Nov. 19

Southside Stomp is proud to welcome back Swing Cville‘s Michael Herring with Katie Albert for a beginner focused Swing and Lindy Hop Boot Camp.

From Sitting out to Swinging Out in one fun workshop!
5 PM -9 PM Beginner’s Swing and Lindy Boot Camp

Workshop Michael and Katie will start you off right away getting you to move to music, teaching you some great basic steps and body movements that will have you social dancing by the end of the class! No partner or experience is necessary.

This class is excellent for the first-time dancer as well as experienced dancers looking for a strong refresher in the basics or who want to work on polishing their fundamentals. You can never get your footwork, connection and frame looking too sharp by focusing on your basics, as this Discovery Channel “Timewarp” clip of lindy hoppers Carla Heiney and Nick Williams illustrates.

8 PM – 9 PM is a joint Beginner and Intermediate Lesson

Glitter and Glue: How to forget the steps and just dance!
Inside turn, tuck turn, swingout, texas tommy… Ever get bored doing just the “moves” you learn in class? Do you watch the pros and wonder “What did they do right there? That doesn’t look like any pattern I know.” Well here’s the answer! We’ll show how to put ad-libs, improvs, goof-offs, slip-ups, mess-arounds, and other miscellaneous bits in between your “moves” to keep the dance fun and spontanious!

9 PM – 12:30 AM DJ’ed Social Dancing
It’s time to cut a rug and show off what you’ve learned! Hampton Road’s monthly Lindy Hop social dance, the Southside Stomp. offers over 3 hours of social dancing to the swinging music of DJ’s Erica Vess (Richmond) and Bill Speidel (Norfolk).

$45 in advance / $55 at the door (includes the full workshop and evening social dance) Click HERE to go to the registration page.

Experienced lindy hoppers can drop in at 8 pm for the final hour of class and the social dance for only $12 / $10 with military/student ID at the door.

Michael Herring’s Instructor Bio

At age six, after watching Dick Van Dyke softshoe his way across the rooftops of London in Mary Poppins, Mike Herring strapped on a pair of tap shoes and never looked back. He studied at Swan Ballet Dance Schools in Fairfax, VA and taught tap with the University Dance Club at UVA. Since then he has been teaching at The Wilson School of Dance in Charlottesville, VA. He performed at ILHC 2008, and in 2009 he won 1st place in the Lindy Focus cabaret competition, but you remember him for his entertaining tap performance at Southside Stomp in February or his great “Dude” routine class during the Lindy Luau weekend.
DJ Andy Nishida

Andy and his wife Rita are the driving force behind Richmond’s monthly Second Saturday Swing at The Dance Space and the long running Jammin’ on the James workshop.
DJ/Artist/Expert dinosaur impersonator Erica Vess
Erica wears many hats (figuratively and literally); but her most important job is keeping you on the dance floor. With an ear for danceability, a keen sense of pacing, and a heaping dose of good time nerdiness, Erica’s musical Kung Fu is strong. She DJs regularly for Richmond’s dancers and packed the floors DJ’ing at VBLX 2011. Erica believes good dancing requires good music, regardless of the era. Her perfect set is a cross between a swingin’ speakeasy and a rockin’ juke joint, with an all-you-can-eat buffet of awesome on the side.

DJ Bill Speidel
Over the past 6 years, Bill “the DJ’s DJ” Speidel has DJed at major lindy and blues exchanges and workshops from Orlando to Seattle and Las Vegas to Quebec City, as well as 2 dozen other cities in between. Bill was the music coordinator/idea guy behind the sold out VBLX 2009, founded Norfolk’s Waterside Swings! and was co-founder of Philadelphia’s Blues Muse and our own Southside Stomp.
